DEADLINES AND DOLLARS

A Documentary, 2008
Karin Schwanbeck Quinnipiac University

This documentary looks at how profit and efficiency have eroded the public service mission of local TV news and how it is challenging hard-working reporters and photographers like never before. Viewers may complain that local TV news is too negative and focused on crime, accidents and fires, but they need to understand that it’s not always easy for reporters and photographers to cover stories that actually impact viewers’ lives when the system is rigged against them.

Karin Schwanbeck is a former TV reporter of 12 years and has been teaching journalism for 16 years. She’s currently at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. Her writing has appeared in NPPA’s News Photographer magazine and other journalism publications.  She received a Morris Berman NPPA Citation in 2001.  Karin will discuss her research, writing and other efforts towards a better understanding of what it will take to survive in a modern TV news operation.
