Bethany Swain has been a photojournalist for CNN for more than 9 years, and a versatile member of CNN’s team since 2002. In addition to covering the political conventions and spending 22 days embedded with Gov. Palin’s campaign in 2008, Swain has travelled to Afghanistan to shoot, write and edit stories on NATO troops on the ground, as well as to the Bahamas and Florida to cover the aftermath of Anna Nicole Smith’s death.
In December 2007, Bethany Swain launched the award-winning In Focus series which is a collection of natural sound stories crafted by CNN photojournalists on various topics, including the environment, the spirit of giving and veterans issues. The multi-platform project grew to become an hour program on the networks of CNN.
In 2010, Swain became the first woman to win Video Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association ‘Eyes of History™’ competition. She also placed runner-up for editor of the year in the same contest. Her photojournalism skills have been honored by the National Press Photographer’s Association, Best of Photojournalism contest in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Aside from her CNN duties and presenting at numerous NPPA workshops, Swain has also been a guest faculty member at Poynter’s BackPack Journalist seminar. She is an Adjunct Professor at University of Maryland and has lectured at several institutes, including CUNY’s Graduate School of Journalism, Temple University, Georgetown University and American University.
Swain is a graduate from the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, where she held the titles of station manager and chief photographer at the college station, ICTV. Prior to CNN, Swain worked at WPTZ in Vermont, WJAR in Rhode Island, and NewsChannel 8 in Washington.
Swain lives in Annapolis, Maryland with her husband Todd and their son, Drew.
