Successfully navigating the complexities of an in-depth photo essay can be an overwhelming endeavor. Forging a strong relationship between a photo editor and a photographer allows for greater perspective on the project and a stronger set of final images. Photojournalist Jesse Neider and photo editor Mike Davis will discuss how to approach a project from inception through completion. From the importance of research and strategic planning the two will share some of their recent discussions as Neider was preparing for a project abroad. Through a live edit of Neider’s raw shoot, Davis will discuss why some images work better than others and how they fit into an overall project.
Do you still think you can't create great portraits because you don't have the right gear? Victoria will show you it is not about how much lighting gear you have that makes a great portrait. It is knowing how to use what you have. Learn some tips for creating compelling portraits with less gear and minimal time. Learn to think on the fly, using what you have in ways that help to make your portrait successful.
Victoria Will discusses her lighting techniques for reading and shaping light for any type of portrait. Using small strobes and portable studio lights, the emphasis will be on how to light subjects and environments in various locations to create different moods and work towards getting the most out of your subjects. Accustomed to working under tight time constraints, Victoria will share some of her secrets to working quickly on location and talk about how to deal with clients in tricky situations while still getting what you need. "I had an assignment to photograph Justin Bieber last year. When it was all said and done — 58 seconds after it began, I had shot him in two lighting set ups and had 22 frames to show for it.”

In the classroom, Rusnak will draw on eleven years of experience at the international relief and development agency, Food For The Poor, to share how you document reality for an NGO.
Ross Taylor will discuss tips on how to maintain your passion throughout your career, as well as ways to build momentum to create opportunity. Scott Broom is often asked, “How the heck can you do anything that passes as legitimate TV reporting if you’re busy driving, shooting, editing and posting to the web?” Broom has learned to find the balance in today's digital age and will share some of what he has learned managing the workload of an assignment desk, producer, photographer, editor and correspondent while getting it all done on tight deadlines. “The crew is gone,” Broom explains, “I work alone, shooting and editing my own video. I write and deliver content on all platforms all the time. I file text, video, and photo updates to the Internet throughout the day via wireless broadband.
